My boyfriend just found out that he's going to be stationed in Aviano, Italy at the end of this summer. I live in Colorado and won't be finished with school until Dec 2010. I love him so much, should i go with him or should i finish my school out here? It's so many months away so i don't know what we'll both want in 6 months. what are the pros and cons of going and staying? of course i'll go and visit him as much as i can..which prolly won't be that often ($800 a ticket). how do i not dwell on it? i'm so happy for him b/c it's his first choice but he'll be so far. my family and friends are nervous that i'll get married and leave with him, but i would want to make that lifetime committment b/c we're ready not b/c of circumstance. help? advice?

6 months seems like along time, but in the grand scheme of things, it is not. Your eduction is yours for life, and it would be a HUGE mistake not to finish it. If you were meant to be together, it will wait a few months, Then, you will be able to be with him, and equipped for the future. Just hold out 6 months and it will be a win-win for you and for him.

Does the Alfa Romeo 147 exist in America?

So about a week ago I took a trip to Europe, where I seen a car called the Alfa Romeo 147 parked in a driveway. When I asked the owner who made the car, he told me Fiat. I've never seen this car in America, and when I checked it out on wikipedia, I had seen that the car in currently in production, and is produced in Italy! Great Idea! Love the show, and i would really like to see the cast and what they all look like now.

HI! For spring break my friends and I are taking a trip to Italy and I was wondering what should I expect. None of us speak Italian, I only know very simple phrases, will that be enough to make our way around? Any places we definitely need to go or see? Also what should we expect guy wise? We're all 17, kind of tan, two brunettes and one blonde, very slim not stick-thin though. Thanks for the help!

younger people in italy speak some english (not that much though, do not expect people to speak english as they do in other europe countries such as germany or greece). also some waiters and other tourism people speak some english, so it will not be really difficult to make yourself understandable.

the weather is not great right now (winter), in my city (northern italy) there are 10°C at the moment. that is 50°F. but in spring, there are usually 25°C all over italy (77°F). southern or central italy is even hotter.

italian guys are very...ehm..."marpione", how could i say? they always try to kiss girls, especially foreign girls.

for the rest... italy is beautiful!!! remember to visit rome and florence!!! and naples, if you have some time.

If you've been following this story as it has been unfolding, you'd know that Knox was an honor student from the University of Washington who worked three jobs so that she could go to Italy to study the language and the culture. You'd also know that she's never been in any kind of trouble all of her life and that experts following this case are appalled by lack of credible evidence, a corrupt prosecutor, an inept court system in Italy, trashy media coverage, and general dislike of the American girl's personality by most Italians.

She was clearly railroaded--an incredible miscarriage of justice. To be convinced that she was guilty is just plain ignorant.

I think they've been sleeping under rocks somewhere. For pure charm I would go again to Althea rooms which is located where real Florentines live and work and where you can feel like a local. Plenty of small local shops where tourists rarely go.

There are really only two places in historic Florence where you get to meet real Florentines and that are not tourist traps: One is the Santa Croce area with its daily market for fruit, vegetables and other goods; and the other is Oltrarno in the Santo Spirito area where Althea Rooms is located.

Try Sundays and Mondays as you will get a better rate - 25 Euros or so per person for a double room.

I loved the history, there was so much to see and even when I wasn't planning on seeing something I would turn a corner and there would be some amazing building or Roman ruins or bridge etc. I loved the food , it was really fresh, healthy and tasty. In America the house wine is never very good but in Italy it was so cheap and good. I was there in January it was cold but it was still nice and there was hardly any tourist so that was very nice. The men were handsome and it is fun to be flattered by the attention from them (even if they do it to all the tourist!) I would Love to live in Italy and I really think I could forever but definitely for a very long time. I could go on forever about my love for Italy, ha ha. The only thing I didn't like was how expensive things were, and I didn't really like Florence (too many America students) that much but I loved Rome and Venice. I am 28 and live in California.

Well, this is a tough situation since you aren't around them much. Dumping him will not be easy. All you can do is let him know you have lost feelings and that you think its time to move on. Oh make it a decision. Don't lead him on or give him signs of hope (like he might have a chance to get you back). Cut it off at the head and make sure he knows your serious and that it's over. Do not keep him around just in case your new relationship doesn't work out well. That will only hurt him.

I want to live and practice working with NGO's in Human Rights or an International issue possibly in Europe/Italy. I cannot decide whether it would be more beneficial for me to go for a masters or a law degree. Considering a law degree is much more more expensive than a masters,it might be better but i dont know how much better chance i have with working International NGO's . I was also considering whether to study here in the u.s for further education or Europe. I have a friend who worked for the World Food Programme in Rome. You need to find the NGOs that have offices in Italy (there are more in Switzerland, frankly), and determine what kinds of positions they have. www.idealist.org might be of some help. There may be some EU positions there, but you would also need to speak other EU languages for consideration, mostly French and/or German.

The legal education is different from the US to Europe, so that will take more in-depth study. I know people who graduate from SIPA (Columbia's International Affairs program) do get jobs like that, and you might need a double degree.

What should I budget for four weeks in Italy?

If you want a cheaper alternative you can stay in a hostel for as little as 30 Euro a night, and spend money on gifts and other things and easily make that budget, food you can estimate with grocery shopping about 25 Euro a day +/-, and depending on what you are doing and where are staying you could easily make that work in your budget.

Hi all.

I was wondering if being of Italian descent, would it be easier for me to become a citizen of the UK, through getting a VISA, easier than being only a U.S. citizen...or are there any avenues I can take with being of Italian descent ? I'm a U.S. citizen.

I want to be able to become a citizen of the UK, in dual citizenship with the U.S., as I have a lot of friends in the UK, as well as a girlfriend, but with the strict VISA rules put into place, the only way really for me is to file for a Fiance VISA, but we're not ready to marry for the sake of a VISA and the freedom to stay as long as I like.

I have spoke with immigration a few times now, and unless I was to be a student, that's really my only avenue that I seemed to have.

I just thought about it though, and I am from Italian descent, have blood relatives still in Italy, and was wondering with Italy being a European country, if that may possibly make it easier for me to become a UK citizen ? I realize they are two different countries, but was curious as to whether their may be some loophole, or just if it may be easier, with both countries being of Europe ? Having Italian decent has no baring on you applying for a visa to the UK or any other EU country. To claim Italian citizenship you are to far out. European countries are not like the USA which give citizenship at birth because your born on USA soil. Most cases one or either parents has to be a citizen of that country to claim citizenship or be living in that country for at least 5-7 years. If you get Italian citizenship you have no problems living and working in the UK or any of the 27 EU countries

This will be my first trip to Europe this year, I'm heading to London, France, Italy, Germany and Amsterdam, I know it will be cold, but coming from Brisbane I'm not prepared on how cold it maybe. Just wondering if someone could help with how cold it might get and what to pack (clothing, good shoes, etc.) I'm not sure if I'll get to see snow but I hope so!

How cold it is, as being in a fridge, or even as cold as a freezer.

The only way to experience it in Brisbane is being in one of the places where they storage food, under cold conditions.

I agree that the layer system is the best, but three layers will not be enough if you have just arrived out of Brisbane.

So try with more layers, T-shirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater, fleece jacket, and it is not bad to have two layers of any. On top of this wear a rain jacket, this gives a good wind and waterproof layer and keeps the warmth in better than many other things.

Bring layers for your bottom half too, jeans or trousers that are warmer, but also a layer underneat. Long thin training trousers, or leggings or long johns, or even silk pajama pants, and several layers of those is possible too.

And good socks, hiking socks for your hiking boots.

In Australia it will be very difficult and expensive to buy a good warm winter jacket, there is no market for it.

In England you have a better chance on finding one, on a reasonable price too. Ask where you stay for a shop that is not too expensive, there are many but finding them is not always straight forward.

Airport shopping malls are not cheap.

Gloves or mittens and a wooly hat are a must, as is a scarf.

The best shoes are waterproof hiking boots, warm, keeping your feet dry, and best of all, available at home before you fly, and for the same kind of price as you would pay in London.

If you do not like hiking boots, you can wear waterproof leather shoes, trainers or running shoes, or even go for wellington boots. Just make sure you can walk on them all day, every day. And bring a second pair. If your shoes are not waterproof, a day in the rain soaks them worse than paper overnight can repair.

We are going to italy for 14 days in february 2008 and not sure how much spending money will should buget for ... we will need it for food, buses and tours.. etc.... on average we cant even work it out. for 2 adults.. all accomedation is already paid and booked.

we are starting in rome for 5 days (travellnig to naples for day) and then going to florence for 3 days (going to pisa for day) then up to venice for 6 days (travellnig to milan for day).

Venice is expensive. no matter how you go. Your best investment is a good pair of shoes, even 2 pair would be good. Break them in before your trip!!

I went years ago when the dollar was good, so I imagine things are more expensive even as food goes.

A good rule of thumb that always seems to be true no matter where I have gone is that you should expect to pay about

$150.USD per person per day w/o accommodation.

This rule has worked for me all over the world and I use it every time. Something to look into, Some museums, galleries are closed on certain days. You may want to try and spend more time in Florence and be sure to get to Ponte Vechhio for jewelry. Rome has so much to see, try to space it out and use the tour guides if possible. Be sure to sit on the Spanish Steps and take in the surroundings. Pisa had great pizza.

I am studying Italian in university right now. I'm a native English speaker, so once I complete it I will be both fluent in English and Italian.

I'm wondering, what are the few benefits of knowing Italian as an English speaker? What can be done with it? Does Italy or Italian speaking Switzerland need those who can speak both English and Italian?

Seriously, learning another language is great for skills, but a "specific" language won't necessarily be better than another unless you are going to be living in that country or if you are going to conduct business with them. So, if either of these two situations is true, then Italian will be a beneficial language for you to learn.

We'll be there for the weekend of 8th March - I've heard that this is the best time because it's nice weather but not too warm (thus not too smelly!) Does anyone have any recommendations for:

- unmissable things to do/places to go/places to eat etc

- what the best option is for paying for boats, travel cards etc? (we arrive midday Friday and leave first thing Monday)

- nice but relatively cheap hotels/hostels (romantic getaway in mind...)

Very important - Italians are for the most part friendly and gentle people, as well as stylish. If you have trouble making yourself understood (not likely in Venice, but you never know), speak more slowly and stay smiling and friendly. And don't forget to say thank you and please .... Grazie and per favore in Italian, respectively. Don't make the mistake of assuming that every Italian you meet speaks English.

Also, if you want a coffee somewhere, have it at the counter like the Italians do. Ask for a Cafe al volte, meaning coffee on the run. This costs less than a Euro per person, but if you sit down at a table, they will slap on a service charge of up to five euro per person, which works out at a very expensive cup of coffee indeed.

The takeout pizza in Venice is delicious and healthy. Thin dough, high quality ingredients. I recommend Pizza Marinara, or sailor's pizza, it doesn't have cheese.

You walk everywhere, or you take a boat. There are very few fat people in Venice. Bring good walking shoes, your feet will thank you. As regards the boats, or vaporetti (the buses on water), you can get a 24-hour pass that will also take you to the islands, but you might not have time to do all those places. That said, this pass is good value.

I could write for hours on what to see in Venice, but I won't. Instead I will advise you to invest in a good guide book, I have DK Eyewitness Guide to Venice and it's really helpful as it has great illustrations. One thing you might like to look out for when you're walking around are the signposts in the city, great help for those of us who are unfamiliar with the place.

Anything else? Oh yes, accommodation. We found a tiny place through www.hostelworld.com, we thought it was an ensuite room, it turned out to be a tiny little flat. It was perfect.

And bring a jacket or jumper for the evenings - it may be Venice, but it's also March ....

And have a great time in one the world's most romantic cities ....

this is everything that has happend to this date:

im am 18 and in college (live there) and in late november, my friend john intorduced me to this girl he knew from back home. she came up once before, but i wasnt friends with them at the time, so i didnt meet her. when she came up, me, her, john, and 2 other kids partied in my room, playing pong. as the night went on, we realized how much we had in common with eachother (ny giants, ny yankkes, naples italy, avenged sevenfold-fav band, and much more) and we defenently clicked. later she took out her camera and took pics of everybody, but mostly with me. there was ALOT of pics of me and her. she stayed in johns room, (who lives on the opposite side of campus) b/c johns roomate went home, so there was an extra bed.

i invited her up 2 weeks later, and she came again. we had talked on facebook and a few times in text messages between these 2 weeks, commenting all the pictures that we took and ****. when she camee up, i wasnt sure if she liked me or not. when she arrived, me, her, and 2 others went to taco bell, and i sat down, she sat across from me, and hte whole time we llookked at eachother smiling and laughing, looking into her eyes. then we went back to my room, and played pong agian, this time, i was her partner, and we took even more pictures. the whole night we were practically "together" (the guys said it looked like there was something between us). this time, she was going to stay in this kid dave's room (becuase johns girlfriend came up, so they wanted the room to themselves). dave doesnt have a roomate, but has an extra bed. (dave lives in the building i do, and everybody else lives with john). so this time, she was to stay in my building, in daves room. halfway thru the night, she moved her bags to my suit b.c me her and dave were plannign on coming back after we were done partying in johns room. so it was like 5 am, dave left for his room, and this girl stayed with me, and we deecided to sleep. so she layed down on the couch in my common room, and i asked if she wanted to stay in my room, so she slept with me in my bed.

earlier during this day, in general convo, she mentioned something about working **** out with her ex who goes to school in DC. thats waht made me skeptical about making a move. about 2 weeks after this, she got back togehter with her ex, but it only lasted a few weeks tops (as everyone expected)

once again, we commented the pictures and talked alot on facebook, and text. she would text me, and i'd text her (so it wasnt a one way thing). a week after new years, there was a point when it didnt seem the same. i takled to her online one day, and she responded with one word answers, and then stop responding. the next day she saiid facebook wass acting slow and gay so idk.

then we chilled with a few friends and i finally saw her again (2 weeks ago) and it was alot of fun. it went fairly well, we laughed and remminsed about storeis from when she came up.

then i text her to see if she wanted to chill, but never responded, until 2 days later, she wrote on my facebook wall, saying we had to do dinner with a few friends.

so last week me, her, john, and johns gf chilled and went out to eat. (our freind nick couldnt make it) when she got to johns house, i was sitting on the love seat, and john and his gf were sitting on the couch, and there was an empty chair. she sat next to me on the love seat right away, when she could have had her own chair, then we watched a vid online, and she practilly leaned against me to watch it. later, had this knitting needle and playfully hit me with it a few times. i asked her when she wantd to come up to visit school agian, and she said either 1st or 2nd week were back, so she is going to visit soon.

also, the first time she came up, i guess one of these kids we hang with (lets call him bob) kept asking her for a kiss and freaking her out. when she met me, she text me saying things like bob sent me a textsaying do u wanna be my pong partner!? what a wierdo (cause me and her planeed on already being partners and he knew it when he asked her)

NOW a few days ago after i got out of work, she commented my face book "I LOVE YOUR NEW DEFAULT!!!!!!" b/c it was a pic of me, her , and 3 others....then i looked at her page and she changed her default to pic of me and her....

all my friends who i tell the story to say she does in there opinion, but i wonder, becuase she doesnt always respond to every facebook comment, or always talk to me if were both online

Maps have already been suggested, but they are pretty cool. A globe is even better; some even light up from inside and are great at night.

I suggest a travel bookshelf, with travel narratives and guide books. You can get lots of guidebooks for cheap at yard sales; some of the information about places to eat and sleep goes out of date but most of it stays current. Go to Amazon listmania and find lists of the best travel books.

If you hang any of your clothing right in the room (on portable closets) try some lovely travel clothing or a panama hat.

Music really changes the space, so why not some great world music for your cd player. Putamayo has a great selection of cds from all over the world.

You can get great travel accessories at the National Geographic or the Rand McNally retail stores. You'll get idea there, too.

You can even get travel theme sheet sets.

If you want to go far out, you can have glistening stars on the ceiling and a sleeping hammock (with or without mosquito netting) for your bed.

i met a guy (35 yr old, im 25)at the karaoke bar. he sang, i came up after and congratulated. later on he came up to me and bought drinks to my friends and me. we ended up at my flat, but nothing happened. my other friends (a couple) were there, too. me and him chatted all night. yes, there were a few kisses. he took my numer and called the following day. we met up. he made it clear that he likes me and wants to meet up again. i had a great time with him that night. but i think i tried to keep my cool and mentioned i dont want anything serious. previously he offered me to travel with him, to get to know him better. i refused, as i said i would not like him to pay for the trips. anyway, i think he seemed a really decent person, but maybe i played to hard to get.

following day it was new years eve and i knew he left to italy to his friends (hes turkish). anyway, i spent new year with my friends. he said he would call when back, which was last night. he didnt contacted me nor yesterday, nor today. i deleted his number assuming he changed his mind. but i found him on facebook by looking at pics from karaoke night...

Where are you going to be going to school? I teach high school... 9th graders this semester. Honestly most of my students are behind in their skills. Most schools have programs in place that will help you get caught up. The most important thing you need to work on is reading skills...you will need those for every course! Practice reading everyday. For example musei Capitolini (Campidoglio) are free entry for citizens of Paris thanks to an agreement of cultural exchanges. On my way to Italy my plane crashed into an unknown island. I was the only one who survived. Please help! I have been on this island for atleast 2 weeks. The island is amazing, everything is made out of candy! The mountains, the lake, even the plateus! The plateaus are an amazing landform to see! They are giant gumdrops! They are very delicous to eat and very colorful. The dark chocolate delta is very good. Instead of water in it, it has creamy dark chocolate in it. Also the vanilla river amazing! The river taste likes vanilla and smells wonderful! The people there are very nice. At first they came off as shy and protective of their territory. After a while I got to know them and they came off as really nice people. They helped me find for food, shelter, and clothes to wear. They are very tall and very interesting looking people. On this island they would not have anything healthy to eat. All day i would eat junk food. I would be drinking chocolate milk all day. I would be eating candy all day also, Jolly Ranchers, Cotton Candy, Chocolate Chip, Gumdrops, and much more. The island people would provide me with clothes, they would have a beautiful clothing made for me out of cotton candy. My shoes would be sneakers and they would be made out of ice hard chocolate and the shoe lace would be made out of twizzlers. I would sleep on a very comfy bed made out of cotton candy. They would build the hut out of sticky chocolate and twizzlers. My time on the island I would helo them collect food before it turned dark and I would help them build the hut and make a fire for warmth. Although this a great island and I could spend the rest of my life on here, I would not want to. Please come and save me! I miss the warmth and comfort of my home and my bed.

Canada - Big country and you can drive there. I would say $500 for car and gas

Mexico - Again, big country so it depends on how far South you want to go. If you fly it is pretty inexpensive, about $400 per person

For all the other countries I would estimate you will need $1,000 per plane ticket for each destination. That is just an estimate of what ticket prices will be in 10 years. So if I were you I would save about $20,000 for travel alone for your trips. Get your passports ready and have fun!

but are you talking about the Leonardo Da Vinci, Liceo Scientifico, or a language school????

If it's the Liceo scientifico, i can tell you that it's a very beautiful, large (most of the schools placed in the center of the city are old buildings: mine was an old moneastery, with really tiny and low rooms) and technological school (there are many computer rooms, there's even a pool)....My brother goes there, and he really loves it.

For the language, dont worry: english is the only language we study (even if some classes study spanish or french or german), so if you find someone who doesnt understand you, it will mean he doesnt study enough... :-D

It's true, the imagine of the boss of the mafia is with dark hair and bronzed skin but we're not like that.. We can have blonde hair, or dark hair, or red hair, and most of the people have so pale skin, that they go tanning...

The night life, then, is spectacular, most of all in the winter, cause many discos are closed,in the summer.

The discos i prefer are Tenax (amazing on friday and wednesday), YAB acronym of (You Are Beautiful),and Meccano.... If you dont like going to the clubs, you can go to bars wich we call "pubs", (we call "bar" the cafeteria). At night, oeople use to go to the storical center of Florence (where there are the most expensive and the coolest shops), eating in the restaurant and drinking in the pubs...

i can give you a little advice. When i hang out with my girls, i use to go to Savonarola Square (Piazza Savonarola), where there's a little (i dont know how to say) stand wich prepares cocktails and sells beers and other drinks.. It's full of young people (when i go there, i always find all of my high school friends), from 15years old to 21-22 years old. And, before going drinking, we use to go eating a pizza to the Edi restaurant.

Or, maybe, if you prefere, you can go to Santa Croce square, or on the Lungarno (it's the street long the Arno river, with all the bridges): there are many pubs and bar wich prepare the "aperitivo", the happy hour (you pay fot the drinks, and eat anything you want)--

Try to have fun and make new friends..... EVERYONE, in Italy, would like to go to America, so they will make you a lot of questions, they will try to be friends with you....well, let them!!!!! You have to make a lot of friends, so you will have a very good time!!!

As a Czech who has been clubbing in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, and Italy, as well as Miami, New York and Los Angeles, I feel that I can safely say that Americans have tried to match the intensity and quality of European nightlife, and failed without exception. Americans seem unwilling to acknowledge this, however, and in failing to do so, I fear they will forever be condemned to sub-par social life.

Often we think in the most difficult moments, the only people that can help us to get over these are the ones we have next to: friends, or at least, that's what we think.

The truth is that the human being is selfish and ever thinks just about itself...that's not so wrong, but, even people we think having a good friendship, in reality reveal themselves profiteers and they come to us just when it's best for them; So, can we really talk about friendship? Or it's just an extra-temporary relationship that exists just when a person has nothing to do? Friends shouldn't help us and always be present in the needing-moments? So why when we need support they never are next to us? And it's just when we start receiving pains by people we thought they were our friends that we understand the truly freindship is not alive..so we start thinking we don't need all other people to can go on..we are people endowed with character and powers and if we wanna, we can face the various jumps of our life, even the most difficult ones..that's true: is consoling to have a friend when, for example, we are jilted or something wrong happens to us..it's easier to face things when we aren't lonely..how many does the consolation of a person really count that we neither know if he seriously takes care about our matter? and are we selfish to pretend that someone rises us up during our difficult situations?That's not...asking help doesn't mean "be selfish" ; it's very vexatious when someone we thought our friend doesn't care about what's happening. The perfect solution..which one should be ? Take it easy and go on careless? Or jilt those people out from our life? I'd agree more with the second one; but this isn't one of the Aristotele's logic laws where there's the third excluded tenet, which is that a third option doesn't exist, I'd opt for a third chance: why don't have a middle-way? I mean, we keep friends like they are and we treat them like the do: we seek them just when we like, if there's something that we can't stand about them, let's say on their faces..pure sincerity, without suffer, neither keep off..so we aren't lonely and we learn to take care of ourselves in a better way, to face our problems without hold someone and even to be more selectives and judiciouses towards people.

If even we manage to cheer up not with people but thanks to a just bought chanel's wonderful dress..well much better! I could make it!

well i had the chance to go to the Amazon with VESA, a volunteer organisation, but because i did not know when my exams were or when i was going to America for my term abroad i didnt take it. But that has made me really gutted, because its the amazon! i mean wow! but it did cost ?1250, as well as about ?700 for flights, which were not included in the price. so it was pricey. but i just really adore travelling and am so gutted im not goin, but VESA phoned me and a girl called Kristen asked why i wasnt joining up, i told her and asked if i could do it the summer after next and she said yes. so i will go to the amazon the summer after next. but here is what im doing next year;

It's an interesting itinerary and depending on where on the Amazon you go, you can make a useful contribution. Tough one. Learn the basics and hope for the best.

It probably helps if you watch German movies (Blockbuster has some german movies .. ), German radio programs (real player has international ronline radio stations) and such .. just to get a feel for the language.

Most of Germans speak English to some extend since everybody is required to learn it in school. As long as you approach them in German and ask politely (in German) if they speak English, most of them don't mind.

As for Austria .. i think even if you manged to learn German until January, you probably still won't be able to understand the dialect. German is my native language and I have problems with the Austrian accent. Same goes for Switzerland. And again, most people understand and speak English.

As long as you try it first in the local language, most people won't mind.

Italian .. i don't know ..

If the function is in just a couple of months, places may be booked. Late timing is also amplified by a tight budget.

You mentioned Maggiano's. People do have bar and bat mitzvahs there. This is expensive -- but my daughter was invited to a bar mitzvah in the Aquarium. Also Turner Stadium. If all else fails, community centers are generally inexpensive. (The Mountain View Community Center on Sandy Plains Road is nice ... but they don't allow alcohol.) The Smyrna Community Center on Atlanta Road has some really nice rooms. Why doesn't she have the reception at the synagogue where the service will be?!

Credit cards are good for a number of reasons but you need to be a bit careful and plan ahead. First, they work nearly everywhere. Italy and France are both great countries with highly developed financial systems and if you need cash, just go to a cash machine and get what you need. Here is why you want to be careful. At times, if you do not pay your credit card bill on time, the company will not honor your card. Lets say your bill arrives as you leave for the airport or you've forgotten to pay it. In the US, its not a problem, you just call them up and give them a check number and you're back in business. But when you're in a small hill village in Italy and need to pay for the pasta and vino, and the card doesn't work, it can be an issue. I had that happen with American Express, and I've been an AmEx card holder since 1976. It was a bit embarassing. I would advise calling your credit card company and tell them you're going on a trip. Some have a security program that flags purchases that unlike your normal pattern of buying. Tell them how long you'll be gone and ask them if they want you to make a payment ahead to avoid problems. Second, do not carry a purse. Buy the type of money pouch that goes around your waist and under your clothes. Keep your passport, credit cards, and large bills in it. Cash enough money for your immediate needs and carry it deep in your pockets. Paris is famous for its pickpockets and I've had at least one issue on the train in northern Italy. Finally, before you leave the states, make a copy of the information page of your passport and stick it in a pocket of one of your pants in your suitcase. That way, if anything happens to your passport, you can go to the nearest US consulate for a replacement.

M.N.-' Strange? There was nothing strange in anything that happened there, they simply did not want me there any longer'.

M.N.- ' The honest answer is that I didn't know then and I still don't know even today. Nobody ever explained why I had fallen out of favour.'

L.B.- ' Your goal record at Rangers was fantastic and when fit and available you were scoring for fun. I, and many others still do not understand why you left under a cloud'.

M.N.- 'Let's just say you are getting very close to why I think that I was frozen out. Scotland is a very claustrophobic place where everything is examined and analyzed endlessly. Scottish society is in many ways a backward place'.

L.B. - 'What do you mean by that?'

M.N. - ' The culture, the underlying culture of Rangers was not good. The first team players had a habit of drinking vast amounts of alcohol during the week. As you know here in Italy we have a different culture as professional footballers. We know that it is our duty to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

Some of the players there like Paul Gascoigne and Andy Goram would turn up smelling of drink BEFORE training!! I could not understand why such behaviour was tolerated by Walter Smith who was manager then'.

He would hear no criticism of Goram and especially Gascoigne who could literally do anything he wanted to and still get away with it! It wasn't just their drinking however, they had some really extreme political and religious views'.

M.N. - ' Of course. They hated Catholics. All of them. I never understood why they were so filled with hatred. Several of us who were Catholic players and all foreigners were told upon arrival, never to bless ourselves at Ibrox as it could cause problems for us. I began to understand that Rangers was an extreme club very similar to Lazio here in Italy. You know, a right wing club with right wing supporters. I personally am not a practicing Catholic but my wife Anna Maria is, and it used to cause me pain when I heard what they said about my fellow Catholics. Lorenzo Amoruso and Jorg Albertz, just kept quiet and kept their heads down'

L.B.- ' What finally brought things to a head?'

M.N.- ' I was rapidly disillusioned by Rangers and especially their supporters. As part of my professional duties I was strongly encouraged to attend social functions which meant going to several Rangers supporters clubs. The last one I attended really brought home to me the fact that I had nothing in common with these people. The anti-Catholic feeling was venomous and the songs they sang that evening filled me with disgust. It was at that point I decided not to give my all for a club that condoned such behaviour. I went sick. Walter Smith knew the real reason for my 'illness' and he just ignored it. But I wasn't lying, I was sick, sick of Rangers and sick of what they stood for and that is the truth'

Rico, its all very well quoting these things which give us an insight into how the clubs were. Negri played for us about ten years ago when bigotry was rife and celebrated at both clubs. Indeed - at Ibrox and Murray Park we have special rooms for the players who need to use them during religious celebrations. This is true for both religions i mentioned above.

Prove it is as rife today and you have a point. At the moment, youre taking something from over a decade ago and saying nothing has changed. With no proof of that, you are making wild and strong accusations about the club and its staff which you cannot substantiate.

Forget it. We have more than enough of our own citizens who are also looking for jobs to worry about foreigners who don't seem to have any kind of plan. In case you didn't know, Canada is in the midst of a very serious economic recession. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are losing their jobs and so what few jobs there are out there will not go to foreigners. Sorry but that's just the way it is here and elsewhere.

Do you have a degree in a field that is in high demand in Canada, such as medicine, nursing or engineering? If so, then you may be able to immigrate to Canada. If not, forget about being able to just come here and stay.

Immigrating to Canada is a very difficult process and we only accept about 250,000 new immigrants each year. Out of close to 1 million applications already being processed, yours would take at least 4 years assuming you even qualify to come here.

We don't take just anyone who wants to come here. You have to either qualify to immigrate as a skilled worker, be sponsored by an immediate relative (parent, spouse or adult child and not, say a third cousin) or have a job offer from a company in which case the company would take care of the paperwork.

I know you want to come to Canada but I'm afraid that you can't just come here because you want to. Please look through http://www.cic.gc.ca and read the whole site very carefully. There is a self-assessment quiz you can take and you would need a score of 67 to even qualify to apply.

i actually live in Venice, but intend to apply to join an english university in a couple of years. In Italy it's quite difficult to find a job in a medical field if you aren't over eighteen (e.g. do voluntary work in hospitals), plus i'm very very busy studying and everything. Is it really so important? And what do they mean with extra curricular activities? Volunteering? Having part time jobs somewhere? What do english students do?

Extra curricular activities are vital for a prospective medical student. Volunteering is something you really need to try and search out. Do as much as you can. I'm sure you can find a volunteer job in a care home or something. It doesn't literally have to be a medical position, as long as it's in the role of a care giver. It sounds horrible, but nearly every prospective medical student in the country (UK) are desperate to get volunteer work wiping peoples bottoms in care homes and look after old people. It's just how it works I'm afraid.

As for specific extra curricular activities, they are basically everything you do to enhance your education outside the classroom or outside school. These can include extra classes you've taken, research you have undergone, societies and clubs you are/have been a member of, sports you play etc. These are also vital for a prospective medical applicant.

One obvious place would be Florence and Venice is a pretty easy trip by train from

Bologna. There are a number of places you could visit using various cities as bases. From rome, you could take day trips to Tivoli, Orvieto or even go down to Naples and visit Pompeii or Capri for a day. From Florence, it's easy to get to Pisa & Lucca (same day), Arezzo, Siena, or San Gimignano. Ravenna or Ferrara are great places to visit from Bologna. Modena is also interesting and you could also go to Verona. From Venice, Padova, Verona, Ferrara and Treviso are easy day trips. You're going into south of my country, maybe the less developed of the country...but the best about warmth of the people.

Italy is accustomed to recieve tons of tourist from all the world.

I don't think you'll recieve special attention just because you're black. Many italians are 'coloured' (as we say for the italians of our soccer team as Balotelli) and don't think the racism (or stupidity as you prefer) is stronger than in the rest of europe.

I'm looking to study abroad next fall in Italy (I think). I'm still unsure of where I'd like to go. Right now I'm stuck between Florence and Milan.

I'm an art history and arts management major in college and I'm interested in photography, fashion, and contemporary art (still love the old stuff, too- vital to learning!).

Florence is a wonderful city - especially if you want to study art. Both cities are well-connected to the rest of Italy and Europe by air and rail. Milan has three airports. Florence has one, but two other possibilities within about the same travel time from Milan to Malpensa or Bergamo airports - Pisa and Bologna. Florence is only 1 hr 35 min from Rome on a fast train and about two hours from Venice. Milan is slightly longer to Venice and about 3 hours to Rome. There are lots of places that are worth visiting here - it depends on your interests and exactly when you're here. With the night trains, it's pretty easy to visit Paris, Munich, Vienna, Barcelona or other places for the weekend - you can sleep on the train overnight and maximize sightseeing time at your destination. If you buy the tickets in advance before the discounted tickets sell out, you can get a berth in a 4 bed compartment on a train for 45 euro each way. We went to Munich for Oktoberfest last weekend for 59 euro each way on a night train.

If the flight that they are arriving on is coming from outside the US, and LAX is their first point of entry into the US, then they will need to claim their baggage before they go through Customs. Therefore, you won't be able to meet them at baggage claim -- this area will be behind security, before the Customs/Immigration area. The first point you'll be able to meet your friend is as soon as passengers exit the Customs/Immigration area.

If the flight that they are arriving on is coming from another part of the US, with another city in the US being your friend's first point of entry, then you would be able to meet your friend at baggage claim -- for arriving domestic flights, baggage claim is located outside of security.

I'm going to Italy in a few weeks, and I wanted to bring it with me, but I've been told that it might not work because I'm going to need to use a converter to plug it in, and that it would blow the fuse or something. You will need a voltage converter, making sure it is one that can handle up to 1500 volts, plus a plug adapter.

However, a lot of electronics are dual voltage these days. Look on your straightener to see if it has a dial where you can switch between 110/240. If so, just make sure it's on 240. You'll still need a plug adapter.

Be aware that it won't work as well as it does in the US. It might be worth avoiding the hassle to just purchase one when you're over there.
